Choosing References

When applying for a job, it is recommended that you have a reference sheet of about three to five references. Of all the people you have worked with or known in your life, who do you choose?

There are two types of references- personal references and professional references.

Professional references are people that have supervised or worked with you in your past jobs. These are the best types of references to have, especially if they come from a supervisor or boss. It can be tough at times to get a reference from a previous boss; it just depends on the relationship. If you were let go due to downsizing or moved out of the area, then it should not be a problem as long as you did a good job. It is not recommended that you give a reference of a previous boss or supervisor that did not think your work was satisfactory.

Personal references are from people that have known you personally for a substantial amount of time. They do not have to be somebody who has worked with you. Close friends and neighbors are examples; but family members do not usually count as legitimate references.

Make sure your references are prepared to talk about you…

-     Ask their permission to use them as a reference.
-     Let them know they should be expecting a call on your behalf.
-     Ask them what they would say about you.
-     Provide them with a copy of your resume so they have a clear picture of your professional side.
-     Keep them informed on your job interview schedule.

Your reference list should be organized and typed neatly. Include the references’ full names, titles, companies, professional relationships, and phone numbers. The references are typically checked toward the end of the interview process, so remember that these people are important to helping you close the deal!
