Letter of Recommendations
Some employers request a Letter of Recommendation when an applicant applies for a position within his or her company. These letters are often written by a previous supervisor or co-worker. They are more powerful when written by the individual responsible for supervising the job duties and assessing the performance of the applicant. If you cannot obtain a letter from your most current employer, ask for one from your next most recent employer; and if this is also unattainable, have someone who knows you well write one on behalf of your character and integrity.
Letter of Recommendation Format:
1. To start, have the person writing the letter state who they are, what they do, and where they know you from. If they were your boss, they should mention that in the beginning of the letter. Then have them indicate when you worked with them and the responsibilities of your job.
2. Next, they should give a brief description of your overall performance as an employee. This should be very precise and detailed. If there were any special successes you were responsible for, this information should be included.
3. The end of the letter could include some enthusiastic comments about your performance. Positive attributes such as excellent punctuality, confidence in performing your duties, and willingness to travel are examples of some positive statements about performance that potential employers would be likely to appreciate.
