Thank You Notes

Writing a thank you note after an interview is not only good manners, it is also a strategic way for you to separate yourself from the competition.

Advantages of Writing a Thank You Note

1.   It helps companies remember exactly who you are.
2.   It demonstrates that you possess good people skills.
3.   It shows gratitude for the interviewer's time.
4.   It reiterates your interest in the position.
5.   It shows that you are serious about this potential opportunity.
6.   It indicates that you are organized and detailed.
7.   It allows them to consider you for other opportunities within the organization.

 Guidelines

-     Tailor the note to the specific person who spent their time with you.
-     Make sure it is neat, clear, concise, and on quality stationary.
-     Personally sign it.
-     Send it promptly; ideally within 24 hours.

Format

-     Address the note specifically to the person who interviewed you.
-     The first paragraph should thank the interviewer for his/her time and serve as a reminder of what position you interviewed for.
-     The second paragraph should reiterate your high level of interest in the position.
-     In the third paragraph you should thank the interviewer once more and mention that you plan on following up with a phone call.

Example

Dear John Smith,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak with you this afternoon. It was a pleasure to meet you and I enjoyed our interview thoroughly. As we discussed, I strongly believe that my five in a half years of construction accounting experience can add great value to the company.
As we discussed earlier, I would sincerely appreciate the chance to be a productive member of your team. After meeting you, I feel confident that we would work well together and that this accounting position is a good match for me.
I am willing and excited to start as soon as needed, so I will be contacting you in the next couple of days to follow up. Thank you again for your valuable time and consideration.

Regards,
