Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why is it better to tailor my resume to a specific job rather than generalize it for any job?

When you have a generalized resume, it shows! It has no direction or focus. The reader will feel more important when it is addressed to them. Highlighting your strengths pertaining to the industry that you are applying to is more impressive than listing your unrelated skills.

2. I cannot fit all of my past experience on to a single page. Why is it frowned upon to have a three page resume?

It is great that you have a lot of experience, and showing that is not a bad thing. However, writing a long documentary about your work history will only bore the reader. Remember that the purpose of a resume is to get you an interview; so the potential employer should be able to look at your resume and know right away that you are what he/she is looking for.

3. I went to college but I do not have a degree. Should I leave the education section of my resume blank?

If you have completed some college, it is still recommended that you put it on your resume. You could add that you completed x amount of credits toward your degree.

4. I do not have any good business references. What should I do?

It is sometimes acceptable to not have any supervisor / manager references, although they are preferred. Managers and employees do not always see eye to eye. A co-worker reference is the next best thing, and a close friend should be your last option. Personal references do not usually hold as much credibility in the eyes of potential employers, so be prepared to provide professional references if you are able.

5. If I decide to use your personal resume service, do you use a standard template or can I actually speak with someone about making it unique and personalized?
